The state is situated in Central Asia. In the north it borders on Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, in the east — on China, in the south — on Afghanistan, in the west — on Uzbekistan. Tajikistan is highland: mountains take 93% of territory, more than half of territory there are at height more than 3000 m. In east part of the country mountains Pamirsk and most part of Pamirsk plateau are located. Though Tadjiks lived some centuries in territory of modern Tajikistan, the state toation has been created only in 20th years of XX century. Almost a millennium Tajikistan was under authority of Macedonians, Arabs, Mongols and other conquerors. In XIII century Tajikistan was a part of the Mongolian empire, and in XVI century — a part of Bukhara khanate. In 1868 northern part of territory has been attached to Russia, and the remained part continued to be in structure of Bukhara khanate, become by protectorate of Russia. After revolution of 1917 Tadjiks have risen against authority of Russia and till 1921 the country has not been completely subordinated by the USSR. In 1924 Tajikistan has received the status of autonomous republic in structure of Uzbek SSR. In 1929 it has received the status of union republic then the part of Fergana valley has been attached to it. On September, 9th, 1991 Tajikistan has proclaimed independence.
